Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical reaction between two or more metals with different levels of chemical activity. All metals have electrical potential.

Galvanic corrosion of the more active metal takes place if they are directly in contact with each other or connected by a wire or fitting. This takes place when the two objects are in close proximity and submerged in any liquid other than pure water. A common place for this to happen, that is missed by many, is a deck fitting with a dissimilar metal in the fastener. Sea water spray, condensation or dew connect the metals and allow the less noble one to become a sacrificial anode.

A simple example of galvanic corrosion and the most applicable is an aluminum lower unit with a stainless steel propeller. The aluminum is more chemically active and becomes the anode. The stainless steel propeller is the cathode, or noble material. When submerged in seawater, they form a galvanic cell.
