Ottawa Marine Surveyors, Surveys Using Moisture Readings

Moisture Metre
A moisture metre is one of the most heavily relied on instruments for a marine surveyor to insure the integrity of wood and glass reinforced plastic boats. It allows a marine surveyor to check for trapped moisture beneath the surfaces.

A modern moisture metre designed for boats should be used by a marine surveyor to detect this moisture. It should have scales for wood exposed to fresh water and one for wood exposed to sea water
because the sea water increases the amount of conductivity.
It should also have one for GRP hulls for both fresh water and salt water.

The moisture metre works using low frequency AC signals transmitted into the material being tested.
When no moisture is present the signals are insulated from one another and the instrument reads dry.
When moisture is present, the resistance between the signals is reduced and the metre determines the
amount of moisture.

The U.S. Coast Guard considers that fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) will not properly adhere
to wood with a moisture reading above 11%.
